Northern Rockies firefighters to honour fallen colleagues with memorial walk

Northern Rockies Fire Rescue is inviting the community to come together next week to remember firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial Day in Canada falls on Sunday, Sept. 13, but members of Northern Rockies Fire Rescue will be taking part in specialized training that day and won’t be able to observe the occasion as they normally would.

Instead, the department will hold a memorial walk Tuesday, Sept. 15, beginning at 7 p.m.

The walk will start at the Northern Rockies Fire Hall at 5013 Cordova Way and continue to Gary Giffin Memorial Park.

The event will honour fallen firefighters across Canada, with a special focus on four Northern Rockies Fire Rescue members who died in the line of duty.

Organizers said the walk is an opportunity for firefighters, first responders, families, friends and community members to come together and reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives while protecting others.

Everyone in the community is welcome to attend the memorial walk.

The walk will begin at the fire hall at 7 p.m. Tuesday and finish at Gary Giffin Memorial Park.
