Northern Rockies looking for residents input on cemetery expansion

The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM) is looking ahead to the future of the Fort Nelson Cemetery and is asking residents to help shape what an expanded site could look like.

The municipality is seeking community feedback on a proposed expansion that would add more options for families while improving the cemetery’s grounds and accessibility.

The preferred concept includes a mix of traditional burial spaces and alternative memorial options, including:

  • Full burial plots and cremation plots
  • Columbarium and memorial wall areas
  • Meadow and forest green burial areas
  • Memorial trees, benches and green space
  • A hilltop gathering area
  • Spaces for reflection and remembrance
  • Additional parking and vehicle turnaround areas
  • Improved access paths
  • Expanded maintenance areas
  • Landscaping and drainage improvements

The municipality said cemeteries serve as places to remember loved ones and honour local history while also providing space for future generations.

The proposed expansion is intended to offer families more choices while creating a peaceful, accessible and welcoming place for remembrance.

The NRRM is asking residents to consider what they want the cemetery to feel like and which features matter most to them and their families.

Residents are also encouraged to review the proposed concept and suggest features that may not have been included in the current plan.

The feedback will help inform the planning and design of the expansion before any decisions are finalized.

The municipality said community input will play an important role in determining how the Fort Nelson Cemetery evolves to meet the needs of residents and families for years to come.

Residents can take part in the Fort Nelson Cemetery expansion survey and share their thoughts on the proposed concept with the municipality.
