B.C. opening thousands more seats for students this fall

The British Columbia government is promoting thousands of new seats ready for students this school year.

A statement Wednesday from B.C.’s Ministry of Infrastructure said close to 2,200 new seats will be open this September.

Those include 480 seats at the new elementary school in Langford, called SĆIȺNEW̱ SṮEȽIṮḴEȽ – a name that comes from the SC’IANEW Nation.

The province said the new and expanded Glenmerry Elementary in Trail is also ready for students next month, with 165 additional seats.

Other new seats are at schools in Abbotsford, Kelowna, Delta, Richmond, and Surrey.

The ministry said it will also soon announce more seats coming to Langley School District.

“We’ve been working hard to build and deliver new schools to meet the needs of students now and in the future,” said Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma in the statement. “Our historic investments in school infrastructure are already making a meaningful difference for B.C. students, and we look forward to welcoming young learners into even more brand-new classrooms this fall.”

Misty Van Popta, MLA for Langley-Walnut Grove and infrastructure critic for the B.C. Conservatives, accused the B.C. NDP reannouncing old or delayed school projects to distract from their failures to deliver new classroom spaces on time.
